Governors at WPA
At Welland Park Academy, our Governing Body plays a vital role in shaping the strategic direction of the school and ensuring the highest standards of education for all students. We act as a bridge between the school and the wider community, working in partnership with the Principal and the local authority to help every student thrive in a supportive and ambitious learning environment.

What We Do
The Governing Body works closely with the Principal and Senior Leadership Team to:
- Set the school’s vision, values, and long-term goals.
- Agree on key policies, priorities, and performance targets.
- Monitor progress and evaluate outcomes to ensure continuous improvement.
- Ensure accountability for the use of resources and the quality of teaching and learning.
- We help define what kind of school Welland Park Academy aspires to be, taking into account the evolving educational landscape both locally and nationally.
Monitoring and Evaluation
Governors are actively involved in reviewing key aspects of school life, including:
- Student achievement and progress
- Behaviour and safeguarding
- Quality of teaching and learning
- We receive regular reports, meet with senior and middle leaders, and participate in committee and full governing body meetings. This ensures we are well-informed and able to make decisions that support the school’s ongoing development.
We also work with the Principal and the School Improvement Partner to set and review the Principal’s objectives, assess the impact of our work, and ensure that agreed actions are implemented effectively.
Support and Challenge
As a Governing Body, we provide both support and constructive challenge to the school’s leadership. We:
- Scrutinise data and reports
- Ask probing questions
- Explore alternative approaches
- Act as a “critical friend” to the leadership team
- Governors also take part in school life by attending events such as careers days, training sessions, and extra-curricular activities.
