Business
In Year 10, pupils get the chance to study OCR GCSE Business as one of their option choices. The GCSE course is split into 2 exam papers, both taken at the end of year 11, both 1.5 hours and 90 marks each.
Paper 1 is “Business activity, marketing and people” where students are introduced to business concepts. They explore the purpose and role of a business from spotting an opportunity through to the growth of an established business. They also look at the role of marketing and human resources.
Paper 2 is “Operations, finance and influences on business”, students take a closer look at the role of operations and finance in business activity along with external influences on businesses. This includes production processes, quality of goods and services, customer service and working with suppliers. Finance covers its role, its sources, costs, profit and loss, cash and cash flow.
During the OCR GCSE Business course, students will explore how different business situations affect decision-making. They develop their understanding of concepts, objectives and terminology, and the impact of modern issues on business operations.
Assessments are carried out at the end of each unit to see how pupils are progressing and if there are any areas, they need more help and support with.
Careers in Business
When pupils leave school, they will be working for a business or maybe even choose to start their own. The skills learnt in business are also transferable to other GCSEs and further study or a career. Quite a high number of pupils also go on to study A-Level Business after taking it at GCSE (even though this is not a pre-requisite).
